Fensgate Cooperative

In 1987 we rescued a piece of Boston history when we redeveloped this building into a 46 unit, mixed-income housing cooperative with ground floor space for offices (including ours). In a remarkably complex plan for a community developer, we pieced together financing from a dozen government agencies and private organizations. The five story structure at 73 Hemenway was built in the early 1900's as five 10,000 square-foot luxary apartments. Later it saw service as a high school and as city offices. Our conversion preserved many features, including oval rooms, ornate carved fireplaces, a grand marble staircase, a WPA mural and a modest chapel replete with leaded-glass windows.
